Can Seasonal Affective Disorder Cause Constipation?
I actually don’t know the clinical, scientific or proven answer to this but I KNOW that every winter while living in Wisconsin, I would get constipated because it felt as though my body was slowing down. My blood pressure would go way down, the extreme weakeness would set in and unfortunately along with this, I would have to also deal with constipation. I learned to stop constipation and even lose weight in the dreaded fall, winter and spring months. All over this site I have healthy eating tips and really yummy recipes that helped me not only stop constipation, lose 20 pounds but eat healthier during my Seasonal Affective Disorder – SAD Disorder times.
Did you ever consider trying a Light Box to help with severe to light symptoms of Seasonal Affective Disorder?
I read many peoples reviews on if light boxes helped them with seasonal affective depression or not. Not everyone gets help but from what I read, many, many people do feel better. I started every day using my box for up to an Hour per Day. You can also put it near your desk, but I had it by my bed or chair.
Carbohydrate Craving and SAD Disorder
You may already know this, but people with Seasonal Affective Disorder, SAD Disorder crave Carbohydrates. If I eat too many Carbohydrates such as Bread, crackers etc… that tends to make me get more constipated. Somehow you need to resist the temptation to eat too many carbohydrates and go for the healthier carbs like fruit.
Go for the GREEN. GREEN means Go Go Go.
To me, I think of Green Vegetables as GO GO GO as for Going to the Bathroom to Stop Constipation. Vegetables in general help stop constipation and the
GO GO GO is for Energy.
I could even tell the difference when I put Chlorophyll in my Smoothies but it made my teeth turn yellowish so I Stopped. Now I put Spinach in my Smoothies and eat big plates of Green, green salads, not the iceberg lettuce salads but the Green Leafy Salads like Spring Greens and Spinach and add Broccoli, Cauliflower, Carrots and I like Broccoli Slaw too for a difference in texture.
Don’t forget to Drink the Smoothies to help stop constipation.
I have many Smoothie Recipes all over this site. I will provide some of the links for you. If you dare to try the Sneaky Spinach Strawberry Mango Smoothie, start out with less Spinach and add some nice Fiber like Metamucil and Flax Seed, but start out very slowly so you don’t get diarrhea.
Hopefully your constipation will get better by the next day, especially if you add the Metamucil. You will be surprised at how YUMMY this Smoothie is. Look for one of my Favorite Smoothies too packed with Fiber. Read also about Psyllium vs Inulin Fiber to learn how to use these Two Fibers in your every day foods and beverages.
My Own Conclusion if Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD Disorder) causes Constipation is,
I BELIEVE IT DOES, but again, no science to this, just my own experience. My body felt like it was just about shutting down with my blood pressure dropping dramatically I believe my digestive system slows way up too in the Seasonal Affective Depression months. It is AWFUL. That is why it is important to eat healthy, take vitamins, exercise and at least try the Light Therapy. What better Light Box could you try. Hopefully you will feel the difference in about 3 days to 1 week.
