Question? What causes constipation? How to Stop Constipation?
Recently I have been a little constipated, not that bad but I don’t understand why I am constipated right now. I have to strain more than usual to have a bowel movement and it just seems like it is taking too much effort to go.
I don’t understand why I am constipated as of late because I am exercising, eating a lot of whole wheat and grain kind of cereals. I drink a good amount of water, juices. I am however Lactose Intolerant so that could be part of the causes of constipation. I eat a lot of cereal, often and I don’t know if this would be one of the causes of constipation.
What seems odd is that I don’t feel any stomach cramps caused by the constipation, nor bloating, except occasional gas. Why am I going through this? Am I just not eating correctly? Do I need to eat even more grains. What causes constipation?
Little Linda Pinda’s Response,
Thank you for taking the time to share with us your constipation struggle. I know this is not easy to talk about or deal with.
First of all, you should see a doctor if you are suffering from Chronic Constipation. You need to find out if you are indeed Lactose Intolerant of Allergic. How is Lactose affecting your digestive system.
I would also consider trying a Gluten Free Diet for at least a month or so to see if Gluten is one of the causes of constipation as it seems to be for me to a point. Some people are Gluten Sensitive or Intolerant and others have full blown Celiac’s Disease and Gluten can make them very sick.
Are You Eating TOO many Carbohydrates in place of Fruits and Vegetables?
I am concerned that you may be eating too much cereal. You mentioned that you eat a lot of grains and whole-wheat. you may want to consider asking your doctor to test you for Celiac’s Disease or GLUTEN Intolerance.
The other concern I have about eating too much cereal, is that your eating the cereal in the place of eating more fruits and vegetables. I know when I tend to eat too many carbohydrates I don’t eat enough fruits and vegetables therefore constipation rears its ugly head and I’m reminded that I need to keep eating my fruits and vegetables.
It can be easier to just grab snacks or eat cereal than to prepare a good salad or sometimes difficult to get yourself to eat healthy fruits. I think our bodies crave carbohydrates and we need to train our body to crave the healthier foods. Believe me, this can be done but to stop the carbohydrate addiction or habit, it is difficult at first. Do it for your General Health as well. You may even lose some extra pounds too.

You mentioned that you’re drinking a lot of water, but I don’t think a lot of people realize just how much water they really can drink on a daily basis. Some recommend that you drink at least 64 ounces of water per day and others will recommend drinking half your body weight in ounces +10 ounces while you are are acutely constipated.
This seems like a lot of water at first, but you do eventually get used to it. To make it easier for me to drink more water, I created a simple tasty water hints. I especially love water flavored with fresh lemon or lime juice sweetened with Stevia. I also mix a little bit of juice with water.
Some of the other causes of chronic constipation can be, underlying medical issues, poor eating habits, not drinking enough water and some medication are some of the causes constipation.
Another reason you need to see your Dr. if you’re suffering from constipation,is to make sure that you do not have an underlying medical condition that is one of the causes of constipation. You want to review the medications you’re taking as some medications can also be one of the causes of constipation, one of them being there is pain medications.
