Are Laxatives Addictive? The answer is YES and Beware of taking harsh laxatives unless prescribed by your physician. Foods that are natural laxatives are  much healthier Laxative Alternatives.  Drinking lots and lots of water is another helpful way to stop or prevent constipation.  I wrote extensively on my severe constipation brought on by taking a clay supplement without proper instruction to drink lots of water.

 Are Laxatives Addictive?

Laxatives can become addictive where your body will NEED them in order to have a bowel movement or stop constipation.  With regular use, this could happen to you.  If your constipation is caused from just poor eating habits or not drinking enough water, this tips will help you.

If your constipation is caused from medications you are taking or an underlying illness, you need to find that out with the help of your doctor.  Tell your doctor about your constipation.  It might feel embarrassing to tell them but it is very important that they are aware of it.

Eating poorly can become a cycle of needing to use laxatives because you are so constipated and the cycle goes on and on.  You need to stop it under a doctors direction.  Your body will rely on the laxative where you are unable to go naturally.  It can take 1 to 2 years to get your natural bowel movement cycle back.  I had a lady call me absolutely desperate for help.  I told her how Juice Plus helped me so much and I gave her my recipes and my eating plan.  She is a single mom with a child with health problems and she could not afford the supplements I recommended.  That is too bad because I believe with all my heart it could help her.

Eating healthy is one of the first lines of defense to stop constipation. Drinking lots of fluids without caffeine or sugar is another great way to stop constipation.

How Much Water Should I drink?

A general rule of thumb is, take your body weight divided in half and drink that in ounces.  So if you weigh 150 pounds, drink 75 ounces of water per day.  If you are constipated, Add about 10 ounces more of water per day.  When you take any high fiber supplements or add fiber to your meals or drinks, be sure to drink at least 8 ounces of water with that or as directed.

How often do I take one, not very often. I am not even sure if I did once a month when I was working on healing my deep fissure.  I do keep them for the few times I mess up and don’t eat properly. Now that I take Juice Plus, I don’t feel the need to take a laxative and rarely a Ducolax.

The problem begins when you rely on laxatives to stop constipation. Your body can get used to it and get to a point where you won’t be able to have a bowel movement without laxatives. It can take a year or more to get off the addiction to laxatives.

Are Laxatives Addictive?  Do You Take Laxatives to Lose Weight?

I absolutely feel awful when people take laxatives to look thinner or “lose weight”. You don’t lose pounds or fat by taking a laxative. You only lose the weight of the fecal matter in your bowel which you will lose anyways if you are eating your fruits and vegetables and drinking lots of water. 

If you have a medical issue or food problem that is causing constipation for which you will need to see your doctor to find that out or try eliminating foods you think are causing you to become constipated. I discovered that Gluten constipates me when I eat too much of it so I went totally Gluten Free for some months and then slowly added it back. I find out even today that if I eat too much gluten, I will start to get constipated so I only eat bread and gluten products on a limited basis.

Nectarine Watermelon Smoothie Recipes

This recipe is very light and delicious.  I created it more for a snack and not a meal replacement because it has less than 150 Calories and no protein.  You need to eat protein at every meal, if possible.
